Mr. Narendra Modi has added a new feather to his cap as India’s best Prime Minister - an honour conferred repeatedly by India Today through its so-called Mood of the Nation Survey (MOTNS). The new feather is successful demonstration of his skill to periodically launch his same vision/idea on global platforms over the years. The proof of glittering success is evident in generous applause by global leaders each time Mr. Modi articulates his passion for Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE).

Global celebrities are getting captivated the Indian way: Millions of Indians like Mr. Modi’s mesmerising skill to launch at least twice the same scheme again at the National level. They take repackaging and rebranding of many schemes and ideas with Pradhan Mantri trademark in stride. The latest instance in point is the global launch of LiFE mission on 20th October 2022 at Statue of Unity jointly with visiting United Nations Secretary General António Guterres.

This is an idea that Mr. Modi has been preaching ever since he became PM. A content analysis of his speeches would show that he has been paraphrasing the concept at different events over the years.

In his maiden speech at United Nations General Assembly on 27th September 2014, he advocated: “We need to change our lifestyles, Energy not consumed is the cleanest energy.”
An official release issued after LiFE Mission launch on 20th October 2022 stated, “As many as 10 heads of states, including France President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Mary Truss, Guyana President Irfan Ali, Argentina President Alberto Fernandez, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina, Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadure Deuba, Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Georgia Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Estonia Prime Minister Kaja Kallas extended support to the LiFE movement.”
LiFE was earlier launched this year on World Environment Day as a global movement through a video conference. Several international personalities such as Bill Gates participated in this event.
Mr. Modi explained: “the vision of LiFE is to live a lifestyle that is in tune with our planet and does not harm it. And those who live such a lifestyle are called ‘Pro-Planet People’.”
As put by an official release dated 5th June 2022, “Global Leaders Applaud India for Focusing on Individual Behaviour Change towards Climate Change.”
It stated: “the Launch also initiated the ‘LiFE Global Call for Ideas and Papers’ inviting individuals, universities, think tanks, non-profits and others worldwide to submit measurable and scalable behaviour change solutions that can drive climate-friendly behaviours among individuals, communities and organisations.”
On the same day, Mr. Modi uploaded few tweets on the Launch. One tweet by @PMOIndia read as “Mahatma Gandhi talked about a zero-carbon lifestyle. In our daily life choices, let us pick the most sustainable options. Let us follow the principle of reuse, reduce and recycle. Our planet is one but our efforts have to be many. One earth, many efforts.”
Earlier on 17th January 2022, PM explained LiFE at World Economic Forum (WEF). According to his website narendramodi.in, “Referring to the Mission LIFE, that he gave at the CoP26 conference, the Prime Minister said that making LiFE into a mass movement can be a strong foundation for P-3 i.e ‘Pro Planet People’.”
The Website added: “LIFE i.e. ‘Lifestyle for Environment’, is a vision of resilient and sustainable lifestyle that will come handy in dealing with the climate crisis and other unpredictable challenges of the future. Shri Modi also told the forum about India’s impressive record in achieving the climate target well in advance of the target dates.”
Presenting National Statement at COP26 Summit in Glasgow on 1st November 2021, Mr. Modi stated: “the world is recognizing that lifestyle has a big role in climate change. I propose to you today a One-Word Movement.”
He continued: “This One-Word, in the context of climate, can become the basic foundation of One World. This is a word- LIFE...L, I, F, E, i.e. Lifestyle For Environment Today there is a need for all of us to come together, together with collective participation, to take Lifestyle For Environment (LIFE) forward as a campaign.”
He added: “This can become a mass movement of Environmental Conscious Life Style. What is needed today is Mindful and Deliberate Utilization, instead of Mindless and Destructive Consumption.”
At COP21 summit held in Paris during November 2015, Mr Modi said: moderating our lifestyle is necessary, and possible, for a low carbon future.”
On 15th February 2015, he observed that people were reluctant to discuss their Lifestyle as they know this would result in problems. He said this while inaugurating India’s first Renewable Energy Global Investors' Meet and Expo in New Delhi.
One wonders whether Mr. Modi would start discussion on individual Lifestyle starting from himself. It would be enlightening to know how carbon emission reduction he has attained in his public lifestyle ever since he started pontificating moderate lifestyles to the world to manage climate change.
Would he give a break-up of carbon emissions (CEs) of his domestic official-cum-political travel and his entourage? Would he compare his lifestyle with that of predecessors starting with much-maligned Mr Jawaharlal Nehru?  Does his global image as fashion icon gel with the LiFE sermons? (bit.ly/1LgIZeQ)  Would he become global brand ambassador for LiFE Mission?
Would he become global brand ambassador for independently-audited sustainable lifestyle under LiFE Mission?
Would he name any VVIP from BJP whose daily life matches with Mahatma Gandhi's wished-for zero-emission lifestyle? Let him lead all Indians into introspecting their lifestyles.
As put by Mr Modi in his Mann Ki Baat on 25th August 2019, “All of us should introspect, dwell upon it, discuss it, bring it into collective discourse.”
